Preparing Caregivers to Care 2015

In 2015 we launched the Listening Session for Working Family Caregivers (LSWFC). We had 2 events one in January and one in July. The LSWFC was an opportunity for working family caregivers to express their unique challenges as well as find out what resources were available to them.

January 2015 (LSWFC) – Caregiving Champion

What is a Caregiving Champion??
The Caregiving Champions program seeks to recognize leaders who have raised awareness of the issues facing family caregivers in our society. In general, Champions have incorporated family caregivers into their work on healthcare, healthcare reform, disability, aging, and long-term care issues.

For policymakers, this may include introducing or supporting legislation that would: support long-term services and supports for family caregivers; include caregivers in medical records (including electronic records); or protect appropriations for caregiver support programs. Champions may also give public testimony or speeches on family caregivers. Administrative and executive branch policymakers may provide support through state or federal programs on caregiving (such as a regulation to include caregivers in the new models of care delivery). Caregiver’s Respite selected Congressman Steve Cohen as our Caregiving Champion. Congressman Cohen is the U.S. Representative for Tennessee’s 9th congressional district, serving since 2007. Tennessee’s 9th district includes almost three-forths of Memphis. (Source Wikipedia) We presented him with a plaque recognizing him as our Caregiver Champion. Congressman Cohen was chosen as our Champion based on his commitment to Long Term Care(LTC) issues in the city and state.

During the Listening Session for Working Family Caregivers Congressman Cohen was engaged with the people and the people were very receptive to him and the information he provided. His contribution fostered an interactive exchange where all of the questions the caregivers had were answered. Some of the questions asked were about LTC and expanding Medicaid in detail. He also shared information about the many programs he was initiating like medical research and care for veterans. Congressman Cohen also made himself available for photos.
