2019 Caregiver’s Rest Conference Recap
Wow. We had a great time at our 14th Caregiver’s Rest Conference!
Our keynote speaker was Shonta Chambers, she is the Executive Vice President of Health Equity and Community Engagement at the Patient Advocate Foundation. She talked about the Patient Advocacy Foundation and how they stand up for caregivers all over the nation by helping to fill in gaps for very hard situations that patients and caregivers face everyday.
Dr Dena Granger, CEO of The Chiro Place, spoke next giving us sound strategy on how to stay young and minimize stress. Followed by a nutrition workshop with Ebony Lott, Extension Agent at the joint TSU / UT Institute of Agriculture Extension Program.
Bridgette Torrance-Williams graced us with song during our lunch break and we honored our 2019 Caregivers of the Year – Solime Rivers and Nettie Crawford.
This years vendors for the Care Fair this year were really phenomenal. Each vendor was generous, caring, and knowledgeable about catering to caregiver’s needs. Please feel free to reach out to any of the vendors (links listed below) as they are all concerned with serving family caregivers like you.
The afternoon session was kicked off with a discussion about balancing work life and caregiving. Katrina Kimble, Certified Wellness Consultant, Awaken Wellness Consulting, was very motivating and gave us all great tips about keeping ourselves cared for even while we care for our loved ones. We concluded in a panel discussion with Laura Pate (Manager of Programs at Alzheimer’s Association) and Melinda Hardin (West Regional Coordinator at NAMI Tennessee), as we talked about the stigmas of mental illness and alzheimer’s disease.
Special thanks to Edith & Horatio Caine, Founders of Sozo Fitness, for warming us up and Jason McCown, Manager of Market Manager for Behavioral Health, for welcoming us to our host, Saint Francis Hospital. A final thanks to all of our sponsors – Spring Valley Hospice, Makedas Cookies, City of Memphis, and especially Stroudmark Photography, for capturing all the beautiful smiles we saw this year!
This was a fantastic way to start National Family Caregivers Month!! Hope to see you all again next year 🙂
