Monthly Resource Highlight: Respite Resource

Blog, Caregiving, Resources

Wanted to talk about respite for a few minutes. Hopefully you have an idea of what respite is and how it can help you on your journey as a caregiver. Respite means a period of delay, rest, or time away.

Since the outbreak of covid-19, I would say it has been especially hard to get a break – especially with many of our normal respite activities on hold because of the lockdowns.  Hopefully you have used whatever strategy you could this year to get the well needed breaks that you have to have to make it!

I learned some good news the other day. The Alzheimer’s & Dementia Services (ADS) centers are back open! They are an adult day care service with multiple locations in the Memphis area that focus on providing relief to the families dealing with alzheimers or other related disorders.

Adult day cares are facilities that will take care of your loved ones with alzheimers or dementia while you go to work. They do a lot of activities to keep your loved ones busy and active throughout the day. Charting the Journey of James Dooley has been a remarkable experience for many families in the community, and now, these centers are back open since being shut down because of covid-19. They are ready again to give us all a break as we go back to work!

Alzheimer’s & Dementia Services of Memphis, Inc. (ADS) is a local, non-profit organization established in January 1983 for the purpose of operating a day program for persons with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s & Dementia Services operates the Kennedy Park Center at 4585 Raleigh LaGrange (in Kennedy Park) and Dorothy’s Place at 3185 Hickory Hill Road, (Hickory Hill near Knight Arnold), to give assistance to “Friends”, those who attend ADS, and their families.

The mission of Alzheimer’s & Dementia Services of Memphis, Inc.  is to help persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders live their lives with dignity and respect while providing relief to their caregivers and support for their families.

ADS’ goals are to provide the caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders with respite from around-the-clock care and to provide the “Friends”  with a safe, supportive, and stimulating atmosphere.  In a time of rising health care costs, we offer a resource of community-based support for families that can prevent, divert or delay the need for institutionalized care and its associated financial and emotional costs.
